Misadventures in D&D

Post by Furious »

This thread is for discussing the goofiness on and off the table for your favorite RPG. Doesn't have to be D&D, it can be another tabletop or vidya.

I've been on a 'perfect dice' hunt recently, and I found a Chinese site selling Chessex-quality dice for cheeeeeeap. The catch? I had to buy 10 sets of random colors.

Two months later (today) I get the dice. 10 Chessex-quality sets of dice...

...all in transparent yellow. *facepalm*

Guess next Saturday my group is getting some free goodies. 😜

Die Hard Dice has some nice stuff and you don’t have to wait for mail from China.

I bought one for myself because it’s green and gold and therefore it’s Loki colours. It’s just lurking in my kitchen next to the Lego Loki minifig, because I don’t play D&D.

My son and his girlfriend do though, and they like their dice.

It’s Walker’s fault, he tweeted about the company, and, well, I trust him. :)

I'll look into Die Hard Dice! See what they offer.

I learned NOT to buy dice made from actual minerals because while they look pretty, you can't roll them because they chip and crack and get thrown off balance.

Besides the yellow dice from China, I received another set of dice from DNDND (Amazon) that scratches my gold itch:

Thanks, Maeve, I'll have to check them out. One of the players in our campaign had also recommended Dice Envy.

Omaha's coming down with a bug. Everybody's sniffling and coughing, so my gaming session for this week was cancelled.

I'm expecting people here to start spazzing about masks and magic distances germs can't cross again 🙄. Regardless of your opinions on the subject, keep clean and keep your immune system strong.

Gaming last Saturday:

Grinding through a mine that loops back on itself. Little to no treasure. The occasional zombie or trap. We get to an area where we can take a shortcut to the front of the mine or swim through some murky water to a new area. Half the party are NPC cat people.

DM: The cats refuse to go in the water.

Player 1 (our dark magic guy): I don't want to go in it either.

Me (the tank): We just spent all this time doing nothing in Minecraft and you- (this comment irked the DM)

Player 2 (rogue): Yeah, besides we're contracted to explore and find loot and bla bla bla-

Player 1: Nope. Staying here with the cats.

So the party splits. Two players stay with the NPCs while the other four (including me) go for a swim. Getting the feeling the DM wants to wrap this up.

Long story short we find nothing in the underwater caverns except for some psychic squids that want to be left alone. In the final cavern there's an exit 50m above the water level.

Me: I climb up there and throw down a rope.

DM: Roll. It's pretty slick and uncl-

Me: Natural 20 with +6 athletics! :D  :D

DM: ... you do it. :x

The next area overlooks a large lava pool 100m down with some dwarven-like figures possibly smelting/forging stuff. We cross rope bridges and whatnot to get to a stone pillar with a ladder that drops down to the lava. No one want wants to go down, expect for-

Me: I do a painter's slide down the ladder and-

DM: You don't do a painter's slide down the ladder.

Me: *rolls* 18 with +6 athletics! I-

DM: You don't do a painter's slide down the ladder.

Me: Hmf. Okay I start climbing.

DM: It's getting hot.

Me: Fine. *still climbing*

DM: It's getting really hot.

Me: Fine. *still climbing*

DM: *rolls* One of the workers below throws a pail of lava at you and (what's your AC?) it *rolls* splashes over your ass for 5 points of damage.

Me: I shout down at them in Common that i have a message for them (I actually did. My character thought these guys were feeding steam engines to run stuff in the mines, and since we killed all the baddies in the mines, they were FREE!)

DM: Another pail of lava gets thrown at you and it *rolls* misses.

ME: I HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOU! YOU DON-

DM: Another pail of lava gets thrown at you and it *rolls* misses.

Me:  I climb back up the ladder and we go back to the water caverns.

Me: Oh, and when I get to the top of the ladder, I unzip my fly.

DM: You don't.

Me: I do. *whizzes on the fire dwarves* :D

The party runs back to the water cavern and we all dive into the murk. The fire dwarves follow us but don't jump in. They just stay up there shouting dwarvey insults and make crude dwarvey gestures.

Me: *idea while treading murk* This is the cave wall over the lava, right?

DM: *realizing what I want to do* It won't work.

Me: Aw c'mon! A few whacks with my great axe should weaken-

DM: It won't work.

Me: There's calcified guano in here? Right? We can gather enough of it and ignite it and-

DM: What's your Intelligence?

Me: ... eight.

DM: IT. DOESN'T. WORK.

Me: We swim back to the mines.

What a weird session.

Would this be an appropriate place to relate my friend's epic, "The Tale of the +5 Butter Knife"?

or perhaps to both heap praise upon and also complain bitterly about Wyrmwood Gaming Supplies?
